Kindergarten Readiness

Tips to Prepare Your Child for a Successful Start to Kindergarten...

  • Encourage your child to dress themselves, take their coat on and off and hang it up, use the bathroom without assistance, wash their hands, and put on their own shoes. Provide serving spoons so your child can serve themselves at the table and clear their own dishes.

  • Start transferring small responsibilities over to your child, if you haven’t already. After a family trip to the pool, you might put your child in charge of emptying the backpack, refilling the water bottles, or hanging up his wet swimsuit. Even when it may be easier for you to complete these tasks, let him accept the responsibility.

  • Set up morning routines that will transfer into a school setting. Getting up around the same time every day, getting dressed, and having an early breakfast together is a great way to transition to school. Establishing a regular bedtime (10-12 hours of sleep) and predictable routine at home is crucial to kindergarten readiness.

  • Get your child a library card, take them to the library to check out books, and be sure to read to your child every day. Read a variety of books! Encourage your child to help you with thank you cards, shopping lists, or notes. They may start with scribbles or pictures, move into scattered letters, and finally, some recognizable words as they enter school.

  • Engage in conversations with your child! Encourage them to ask questions and take extra time to explain things to them.  Limit their screen time with TV and devices.  Talking with your child promotes communication and language development.

  • Have fun with numbers & counting. Start with counting different objects around the house. Strive for recognizing and naming numbers 1-10, even when they are out of order. Try counting 10 objects, pointing to each one as they count.

  • Children who access ongoing health care have better attendance and are more engaged in learning. Consistent attendance helps children prepare for school. Routines such as handwashing help children stay healthy.

  • Students may bring their school supplies to Meet the Teacher Night or the 1st day of school. If your family needs support with getting school supplies, please reach out to our campus counselor.

Family Involvement!

We encourage you to be a part of your child's school! Kids develop better social skills and show improved behavior when their parents are involved at school. Studies have also shown that kids are less likely to skip school, less disruptive in class, and more likely to do their homework when their parents are involved. Join PTO at your child's school.
